Most of these rugs are made in cities of ancient Persian either in middle or north (north west and north east) of Iran. The most famous cities producing traditional rugs are Kashan, Qum, Isfahan, Tabriz, Mashad, Nain, Birjand and Kerman.
There are many different patterns in traditional rugs but usually they fall into one of the following categories: Shah Abbasi, Arabesque (sleemi), Vase, Herati (Fish Design), Botteh (Paisley), Panel (Garden Design), Archeological (treasure Design) and Afshan (Allover Design).
