Tribal Rugs
Origin of handmade rugs is nomadic. Tribes in Ancient Persian and Babylon were perhaps the pioneer rug weavers. Oldest rug Pazyryk that was found in Siberia dated 2500 BC comes from that region. Historian believe it was made in West of Iran.
Even today you find most of the tribal rugs in the market come from central to north west of Iran. Due to the mountainous nature of that part of Iran, many people lived the Nomadic life. However the number of people living in tribes is vanishing due to climate change and mass migration to big cities.
Tribal rugs are some of the most unique handcrafts made by mankind. The design is usually asymmetrical as it comes from the imagination of the weaver. Majority of tribal rugs are wool on wool and made using vegetable dyes and always look more organic and handmade than urban rugs (not uniform).
Tribal rugs are made with love. True nomadic art that is a story telling. Usually made for use in their tent and that is the reason it is difficult to find them in larger sizes.
My passion for tribal rug has grown over the years and I have become a collector of them. I hardly would pass on the chance to buy a tribal rug as it is becoming a dying art.
Shoparug has the largest collection of tribal rugs in Australia. We source our rugs direct from the tribes and try to cut middleman so we can assure the weavers and the tribe get higher prices for them.
